Destiny "Future of the Past" GMR/Playground Gothenburg band Destiny has, as most people already know, a long history. The band was formed as early as 1982 and their dark metal has sounded pretty much the same since then on the four releases predating todays object of analysis. Bass player Stefan Björnshög has always surrounded himself with eminent musicians and attained good results. The musicians on the latest production Future of the Past are no exceptions. Already at Sweden Rock Festival 2002 one could both see and hear that this is the best line-up that Destiny has ever had. It was heavy and solid just like most of their albums. Future of the Past is an OK power metal album with progressive elements. A major difference compared with many other bands is that Destiny has a somewhat darker undertone than power metal in general. The band can rather be compared with e.g. Nevermore. The songs are powerful and contain lots of riffs and unusual structures. The fifth track seems to be yet another new approach for Stefan Björnshög. On this one the bass player isnt involved in the song writing at all. Angels is written by Göbel/Fagerstrand and its my favourite track. Heavy and forcing with some grunge feeling in the quiet intro. I like that. Fun and relatively new for Destiny is that singer Kristoffer Göbel growls now and then. Mr Göbel might not be the most original vocalist in Destiny, but he definitely possesses the competence needed. Zenny Gram, who was the previous singer, was probably the most original one theyve had. That man certainly had a loud pipe. The fact that he degraded himself as a Wilmer X wannabe in TV4s Reach for the Stars is just something well have to try to forgive However, the album has a few minor flaws and shortcomings here and there, but I cant say that these are bigger than a mole on the buttocks of an extremely beautiful woman. In other words: who cares? Welcome back Destiny!
